Tickhill occurs as little village in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster (part of South Yorkshire, England), on the border with Nottinghamshire. It lies Octad miles south of Doncaster, between Maltby and Harworth, on the conjunction of the A631 and A60 roads, and adjacent to the A1(M) motorway. These are placed at 53° Xxvi' To the north, 1° Sextuplet' Xl" West, at an elevation of around 20 metres above sea level.

The origins of the name 'Tickhill' are unclear. A local historian, Tom Beastall, suggested that the hill on which the castle stands once belonged to the 'Tica' family and was thus knowns as 'Tica's Hill'. Alternatively, the Rev John Hunter published an article in 1844 in which he proposed that the name is a corruprtion of 'The Wick Hill'. Wick was an old yorkshire name for a fortified mount. In a Yorkshire dialect, The Wick Hill' might be prounounced as 'Th'Wick HIll'.

Notable buildings in Tickhill include the substantial ruins of Tickhill Castle, St Mary's Church - a large thirteenth century parish church and the buttercross.

The village's history dates from before 1066 when William I of England gave the lands and castle to Roger de Busli. Tickhill was notable enough to be invited to send representatives to Parliament in 1295, but not subsequently.

The castle later came into the possession of the Percy family, and in the English Civil War, it was stormed by the roundheads.

The Tickhill Psalter, a medieval manuscript, is currently on display in New York.
